Pragmatics and Semantics
A variety of contemporary philosophical approaches to pragmatics focus on semantics. Brandom, for example is focused on the significance of words (albeit from a pragmatic point of view).
Others take a more holistic approach to pragmatics, such as relevance theory, which seeks to determine how an utterance is understood by the hearer. But this approach tends to overlook other aspects of pragmatism, such as epistemic debates on truth.
What is the definition of pragmatism?
Pragmatism provides a different perspective to continental philosophy and analytic philosophy. Charles Sanders Peirce initiated the concept and William James extended it. Later, Josiah Royce developed the philosophy. It had a significant impact on areas of inquiry ranging from theology to philosophy of science however, it also found a place in the philosophy of ethics, politics, aesthetics, philosophy of language and social theory. The pragmatic principle is at the heart of classical pragmatism. It is a principle that clarifies the meaning of hypotheses via their 'practical implications' or their implications for the experiences of particular situations. This leads to an epistemological view that is a form of 'inquiry-based epistemology' as well as an anti-Cartesian explication of the norms that govern inquiry. The early pragmatists were divided on whether pragmatism was a scientific philosophy that embraced an ethos of truth (following Peirce) or a broad alethic pluralitism (James & Dewey).

However, others contend that this kind of relativism is seriously misguided. The latter half of the 20th century saw the resurgence of interest in classical pragmatics. This led to a myriad of new developments. These include the concept of a "near-side" pragmatics that is focused on the resolution of ambiguity indexicals, demonstratives, and anaphors. There is also a "far-side" pragmatics that looks at the semantics in discourses.
What is the relation between what is said and what is done?
Semantics and Pragmatics are regarded as being on opposite ends of the continuum. On the near side, semantics is seen as a concept, whereas pragmatics is on the far side. Carston for instance asserts that there are at a minimum three main kinds of pragmatics in the present that are: those who see it as a philosophy based on the lines of Grice; those who focus on its interaction with grammar and those who are concerned with utterance interpretation. Near-side pragmatics is thought to include issues like resolution of ambiguity and ambiguity as well as references to proper names, indexicals and demonstratives, anaphors, and presupposition. It is also thought to address some issues that involve specific descriptions.
What is the relationship between pragmatics and semantics?

While pragmatism may be a viable alternative to the dominant philosophical tradition of continental and analytic philosophy but it's not without its critics. For instance, some philosophers have argued that pragmatism is simply an extension of deconstructionism and is not truly an innovative philosophical method.
In addition to these criticisms, pragmatism itself has been challenged by technological and scientific advances. For instance, the pragmatists have struggled to reconcile their beliefs on science and the evolution theory, which was developed Richard Dawkins, a non-pragmatist.
Despite these difficulties, pragmatic approach continues to grow in global popularity. It is a third option to continental and analytic philosophy traditions, and it has a variety of practical application. It is a rapidly growing field of inquiry. Many schools of thought have emerged and incorporated aspects of pragmatism within their own philosophy.
